Most of our popular sites sit in that sweet spot of 30-45 feet, giving you plenty of bottom time to really explore. The water temperature stays comfortable year-round, ranging from the mid-70s in winter to the low 80s in summer. You'll gear up right on the boat, and I'll be there to help with any equipment questions. The boat ride to our dive sites is typically 15-20 minutes, giving us time to spot dolphins or sea turtles on the way out. Once we reach the mooring, it's a giant stride entry and down we go into one of nature's best-kept secrets.

Dive Brief & Gear Info

All our dives use standard recreational scuba gear - BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask, fins, and tank are all included. I always recommend bringing your own mask if you have one, since a good fit makes all the difference underwater. We primarily dive nitrox when conditions allow, which gives you longer bottom times and shorter surface intervals. The dive sites around Key Largo are mostly moored, so we tie off to permanent moorings to protect the reef. Navigation is straightforward since most of our reefs run parallel to shore in a southwest to northeast direction. I'll point out the current direction during our briefing, and we'll plan our dive accordingly. Safety-wise, we always dive with a surface marker buoy, and I carry a VHF radio and emergency signaling devices. The boat stays anchored at the site, so you'll always have a reference point. Water entry and exit are easy thanks to our spacious dive platform with a sturdy ladder. Between dives, we'll surface interval on the boat while I share local knowledge about the marine life you just encountered and prep for dive two if you're doing a two-tank trip.

Marine Life You'll See

The reefs around Key Largo are home to an amazing variety of tropical fish and marine creatures that make every dive feel like swimming through a nature documentary. French angelfish are probably the most photogenic residents here - these curious black and yellow striped beauties grow up to a foot long and aren't afraid of divers. They'll often swim right up to your mask for a closer look, especially during their spawning season in late spring and early summer. You'll spot them year-round, but they're most active in the warmer months when they're feeding heavily on sponges and algae growing on the coral heads. Nassau grouper are another highlight, though these guys are much more shy than the angelfish. These mottled brown and white predators can grow massive - some of the ones we see regularly are pushing 3 feet long and probably weigh 15-20 pounds. They like to hang out in caves and overhangs during the day, so keep your eyes peeled in the shadowy spots. Winter months are actually best for grouper encounters since they're less spooked by divers in the cooler water. Green sea turtles are the real showstoppers though - nothing beats having a 200-pound turtle glide past you like you're not even there. These ancient mariners are most active in the morning hours, so our early dives give you the best shot at turtle encounters. They're here year-round, but summer months bring more juveniles to the shallow grass beds between dive sites.
